About Blue Planet Project
The Blue Planet Project is part of a global movement, collaborating with partners worldwide to emphasize the fundamental truth that “Water is life.” Embracing the principles that position water as a human right, a public trust, and an essential component of the global commons, the mission is rooted in the pursuit of water justice.
Aligned with international networks such as Friends of the Earth International, Red Vida (the Americas Network on the Right to Water), and the People’s Health Movement, the project extends its reach across both Southern and Northern hemispheres, working with organizations and activists dedicated to the cause.
The commitment is to safeguard water for present and future generations. This involves fostering collaborations with local organizations and activists, engaging in grassroots struggles to protect democratic, community control of water. Concurrently, there is an endeavor to build a movement advocating for the complete realization of the human right to water and sanitation.
The motivation stems from the stark realities:
- Globally, nearly 800 million people lack access to clean drinking water.
- Annually, over 2 million individuals, predominantly young children, succumb to preventable diarrhea resulting from consuming unsafe water.
- Every day, people endure suffering and mortality due to the unavailability of clean, safe water.
Refusing to accept this status quo, the organization recognizes that the global water crisis intensifies when water is exploited for profit. The overarching goal is crystal clear: to shield water as a vital resource and ensure its public management, making it accessible to everyone at reasonable, public rates. Water, being a quintessential source of life and a fundamental human right, must be accessible to all.
